Conradh na Gaeilge Charn Tóchair
Conradh na Gaeilge Charn Tóchair aims to promote the Irish language in the Carn Tóchair area and beyond. Historically the group has been in existence (registered with Conradh na Gaeilge) for over 120 years and was very active in the early half of the 1900s.
Recently the Branch has been reconstituted and has been supporting the growing numbers of Irish speakers within the area and since its reconstitution has been focusing its support on the family and parents of children attending Irish-Medium Education (IME).
An important part of this has been supporting the Naíscoileanna (Irish-medium Pre-schools) which are often the first point of contact between families and the Irish language. The branch is focussed on supporting this important relationship and provides a support network for the staff, committees and parents who send their children to local Naíscoileanna.
The group has been responsible for organising a range of language and support classes for both children and adults as well as fundraising events over the recent years. In September 2015, with funding from the Big Lottery, we started Grúpa Tuistí agus Tachrán (Parent and Toddler Group) which provides a support network for parents with young children (see below for further information). The Branch also introduced a programme ‘Gaeilge sa Bhaile’ to help parents learn Irish phrases which they can use in the home (see below for more information).
